Soy what?

Ok so I need help. Looks like I will be going Vegan for the next 6 months (well okay I'll be eating meat still, so not really). Piper is not tolerating any of the dairy that I am eating and I still want to nurse her, so no dairy for me! I need any recommendations you might have for good vegan products and where you got them from. The doctor said I should go to Whole Foods, any other suggestions? Wish me luck because pretty much my entire diet centers around cheese and yogurt. I miss cheese already; string cheese, cheddar cheese, provolone.....oh and I love sour cream....oh and I love milk chocolate. Damn!

Oh my gosh. This is going to be interesting! (I'm not vegan, know nothing about it, but I'm curious to see how you do with it!)

Amanda...you should talk to Lara, she had to do that with Lucas so I am sure she has some great ideas! Good luck!

Mother's Market has a wide variety of vegan foods. Their deli also has prepared vegan meals and they are really good about labeling what's vegan and what's vegetarian (no meat dishes). Everything I’ve had there has been quite tasty.

Well since I am one of those vegetarian people I think I can help you. You can get any veggie "meatless" products at Trader Joes, Mother's Market (a bit pricey but a good selection), grocery stores and the best deals are at good ol Target for frozen stuff (yes they are the cheapest). I am not a big soy cheese eater but there are other products that are good, you just have to be willing to try them. Almond Breeze (chocolate) is very good and is one of my favorites if you like a chocolate milk flavor. Good luck, I don't know how I could live without cheese!

Wow... that is tough! I've done it before. All the previous recommendations (Mother's, Trader's, Henry's and Whole Foods) will have a lot of choices for you. It's just more time consuming at first as you learn all the substitutions and find out what you like. We still drink soy and limit dairy and meat, but that's just a matter of preference now.

Hi Amanda,
I'm Lynnae Williams mother-in-law and got onto your site when checking out my son and daughter-in-laws blogspot. Anyway, I have a son who is vegan and here are some of the products that I've used which I find to be very good:
Soy Silk soy milk plain, chocolate and coffee which you can get most anywhere; Earth Balance organic buttery spread is a delicious soy based butter (I buy the whipped variety)you can get this from Trader Joe's, Mothers or Wholefoods; Whole Soy & Co. soy yogurt (Mothers, Wholefoods); Tofutti sour cream (Mothers, Wholefoods, Traders); Soyatoo Soy Whip whipped soy topping (this is delicious! I have been waiting a long time for someone to market something like this. Best to leave out of the refridgerator a little while before using since it doesn't spray very well when just out of the fridge) you can buy this at Wholefoods or Mothers); Uncle Eddie's Vegan cookies from Trader Joe's are good; Soy Delicious ice cream (Traders, Mothers, Wholefoods);and I'm not sure if you are able to eat eggs, but Ener-G egg replacer is a good alternative for baking if not.
Good luck!

Hello Amanda,
Sandie Williams again.
I meant to also tell you that Trader Joe’s have a pretty good brand of individually wrapped soy cheese slices (I can’t remember what the name is, but you can only get them at Traders). Bear in mind that they are not going to taste like real cheese, but they are pretty good for grilled cheese sandwiches! Most soy products are an acquired taste, so be a little patient and you will grow to tolerate and even like them! I am totally into soy milk and soy butter and cream now and wouldn’t change back to regular dairy products. I would caution you also to be sure to read labels on everything, a lot of products that you would not expect to contain dairy do have milk or whey in the list of ingredients.
